August 22nd 2009 Source: The Newport Plain Talk Dear Editor, I just want to say how proud I was of our community in regards to the Monday meeting for the Animal Shelter. I felt blessed to be part of a community that started the meeting with prayer. Also, a few Biblical references were made throughout the meeting by a couple of people that spoke, and I really appreciated that. I am proud to be part of a community that allows freedom of religion and allows its citizens the freedom to exercise their beliefs. I also feel blessed that we have Unified Marine as part of our community. I truly appreciate their speaking out in regards to the animal shelter; in the newspaper, and in person at the meeting. I also think that it is wonderful that they allow employees to bring their pets to work with them.
I have personally encountered animals romaing the roads and/or chasing cars in Cocke County as their owners do not fence them (8 dogs this week to be specific). I have also watched cars swerve to avoid animals that are in the road, and thankfully there was no opposing traffic at the time of the swerve. Sadly, I have also noticed animals that did not escape the traffic. So, due to my personal experiences, I feel the animal shelter is vital. I urge the owners of pets to be responsible pet parents by fencing their pets, for the pet's safety and for public safety. Please do not chain a dog to a tree to be forgotten, as dogs are pack animals and only wish to be part of your pack/family. PLEASE spay or neuter your pets. Pets require responsible humans. The authority on this matter has spoken..."A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast..." Proverbs 12:10. Thank you, all of you, that volunteer your time at the Newport Animal Shelter. Thank you for allowing me to express my opinions here. Sincerely, J. Baines |
